Interview with Actress and Writer Stacey House

PictureActress and Writer Stacey House
Guys and girls!

My great friend Stacey House - an actress and a writer - has just written a new book!

I had the pleasure of interviewing her, and I'm so excited for you all to learn more about Stacey. She is a fantastic person, and I hope you'll check out this interview and her new book, "Hauling Hollywood!"

Stacey, thank you for agreeing to an interview for “Behind the Sign!” Can you please briefly discuss your background and how you began working in the entertainment industry?

"When I was the age of 13, I did a star search called AMTC. I always knew when I was adult I would come to LA to pursue my dreams. The first step to getting into the entertainment industry is not knowing anything other than the dream you have and taking steps towards that. It’s a step of faith. When you are new to the city the best way to get your feet’s wet is to start doing background acting. Although extra work is the smallest role in the show, It can teach you how everything works. Never undermine small beginnings, keep being your best! A lot of my acting roles had more to do with casting and if I fit the category they were looking for. Take classes, get an agent and Manager, but most of the “hustle” is up to you. Your diligence and hard work along with time and chance will put you in front of important people. But I can guarantee you if you do not have the confidence which comes from your experience of working well on set, as well as your craft you will not be ready. The industry wants people who are ready to jump in and do the job without intimidation or uncertainty. So prepare yourself in all aspects."

What have you enjoyed most about your work as an actress, and is there a project that you’ve worked on which you consider to be your favorite?

"My favorite part about being an actress is the art of being in this imaginary place with other talented individuals. I love creating a story that has messages to the viewer. To provoke the viewer to think, laugh, cry or fall in love. I think the most fun project I have worked on, was the movie called The Nun. I don’t normally do stunts, but I had to be thrown across a room and drowned in water, and so many other movie tricks! It was all new for me, and I was learning so much, and enjoyed every moment of it!"

You just wrote a book!! And I loved it!! Can you please talk a little bit about your book, as well as discussing what inspired you to write and self publish your stories to share with people?

"As an actor sometimes you have days off and it’s good to have a side gig. I chose to become a Ride-Share driver because I liked the fact that I could stop working if I needed to go to an audition. I wrote the book “Hauling Hollywood” (Diary of A Girl Ride-Share Driver) to share my hilarious stories. Every day it seemed as though I was in this unscripted movie. I discovered my love for writing! and wrote down my experiences to share with others! I realized I was not alone in the pursuit of my dreams. That so many others in my car had a life of their own, and stories to tell! I called this character study!  It’s important to be an individual, be yourself through the character, when you go to an audition. There is not single person on this earth that can be you! And that’s what  will shine in the audition room."

What do you believe is the most important piece of advice that you can offer to anyone considering a career in the entertainment industry?

"The best piece of advice going into the entertainment industry is, what an acting teacher said to me years ago. Go to Japan, learn Japanese. You’re thinking what!? I want to be an actor. What my acting teacher meant is, we need a life outside of acting. Our life experiences enrich our lives and make us interesting individuals and we gain emotions that help us act in the scene. Remember you are not a one trip pony. You are a multitalented Individual, and having a life outside of acting is important to the casting directors. They will be sure to ask you about yourself and your hobbies. If you have nothing to say about yourself other than acting, the casting directors will most likely not be interested. They want to work with bright individuals who they can share a knowledgeable conversation with on set about what is going on in the scene. This is my experience as a SAG-AFTRA actress of 10 years. I want you to know that it has not necessarily been my talent that the industry has remembered, but more my work ethic and professionalism. If you have these qualities, you will make in Hollywood."

Super Important Update Regarding #Coronavirus in #California

3/7/2020

Hey guys and girls,

I hope you are well.

As all of you are probably aware by this point, the world is dealing with a serious issue with the new coronavirus, "SARS-CoV-2" which causes the disease "COVID-19." After living in California for nearly 15 years now, I've been preparing for a bad earthquake for a very long time, "the big one" as it's often referred to. Californians - as well as people everywhere - should always have a plan in case of a natural disaster of any kind.

The same principal applies to a different kind of disaster - like an epidemic that we're seeing unfold today. I wanted to share a message that was posted to the San Mateo County Health website regarding the seriousness of what we could be facing in the coming days, and how we can be as prepared as possible. (San Mateo County is a county located in Northern California, near San Francisco.)

I found this particular post to be very well-written, informative, and not "overly-hyped" to create panic. Regardless of how severe this disease becomes, there likely will be social impacts that we all need to be prepared for. I hope you find it to be helpful, wherever you may live. I plan to film a video about some of my thoughts on my YouTube channel very soon. (Please subscribe here!)

Please feel free to share your thoughts below, and as always, don't panic! Simply be informed and prepared.

With Love,

Jesse

Here is the statement posted by Scott Morrow, San Mateo Health Officer, on March 5, 2020:

"This is a difficult message to share, but it is important to recognize how difficult the times ahead may be and how you must now take assertive action to prepare for them. Our local situation surrounding novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is changing rapidly.  COVID-19 is spreading in our community, the extent of which is unclear. It has likely been spreading for weeks, perhaps months. I have no reason to believe that how it’s spreading in other countries won’t be replicated to some degree here. We now all need to take assertive actions to inhibit the spread of this new virus. Some of those actions are described below. I advise that individuals, schools, business, and all other sectors of our community take immediate steps to change behaviors and take definitive action.
Our lives will be significantly disrupted by the measures needed to respond to a global pandemic. A pandemic is a global occurrence of an infectious disease. A pandemic is a disaster with unique characteristics. The two most important differences between a pandemic and other disasters are that the whole world is going through this disaster at the same time, and people may become fearful of other people. The current COVID-19 outbreak clearly has the potential to turn into a severe pandemic.
County Health continues to work with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and our state and local partners to manage testing and monitoring of persons who have been exposed to COVID-19. But our focus is rapidly changing from a containment strategy (identifying cases and contacts) to one of community mitigation—taking steps to lessen the broad impact of the disease. County Health and our public and private partners are taking steps to increase our ability to respond and are planning for a sustained response to COVID-19.
How the world operates during a pandemic is different from how the world operates normally. This is not business as usual. With a pandemic comes significant disruption to supply chains (the process of how things get from where they are made to where they are used), transportation, and travel. Even if the disease is not rapidly spreading in our area, we may face difficulty obtaining the goods and services we are accustomed to, public events may be canceled, and our ability to travel might be restricted.
San Mateo County Health continues to advise that the steps to prevent the spread of flu will also guard against the spread of COVID-19: cover your cough and sneeze, wash your hands frequently, avoid shaking hands and touching your face with unwashed hands, and if you are not feeling well or are experiencing cold, flu, or other symptoms, stay home from school or work. If you are mildly ill, there is no need to contact your primary care provider as they are very busy right now. If you are significantly ill, contact your primary care provider.
Here are the most important things for you to consider to improve your personal and organizational preparedness:
What matters most is how households, neighborhoods, community groups, businesses, and other organizations prepare. What does that mean? Preparedness equals self-sufficiency. The government will help where it can, but it may have a limited ability to respond directly to you due to the scale of the disruptions.
Individual and community preparations should focus on three tasks—reducing each person’s chance of getting sick (see both individual and more general public health recommendations both above and below), helping households with basic survival needs during a pandemic, and minimizing and coping with larger disruptions in how the normal day-to-day world works.
All businesses and other organizations should now be done reviewing their continuity of operations plans for how they will operate if their employees are unable to work and how they will interact with members of the public and prepare to implement these plans soon.
All medical facilities and providers should be done reviewing their surge plans for how to handle increased numbers of patients and be prepared to implement.
Getting ready for a pandemic is largely about preparing for possible shortages. In a pandemic, supply chain disruptions are inevitable but are also unpredictable.
Since it contains vital supplies, a good start is to make sure your earthquake kit is up to date and ready to go. Of course, having supplies beyond the typical earthquake kit is a good idea. What you decide to have on hand is based on your individual and family situation and your individual preferences.
One likely shortage will be medications. You should attempt to obtain a couple of months supply for your critical medications.
If you have other critical supply needs, you should conserve them and stock up on them now.
Now is also the time to think about how you will care for loved ones at home if they or you are sick and how you would limit spread within the family.
Frequent and appropriate hand-washing is far from a perfect solution, but it’s easy, under your control, and has no significant downside.
Like washing your hands, wearing a surgical mask may help a bit, but you need to know that surgical masks don’t offer much protection when they are worn by people who are well. They are most helpful when worn by those who are already sick so that they are less likely to transmit the disease to others. Surgical masks and masks offering higher levels of respiratory protection are already in short supply and should be prioritized for use in health care settings.
You should use a barrier, such as a paper towel or tissue, to touch commonly touched surfaces, such as any door handles or elevator buttons.
Change from my previous message: I am now asking for the implementation of the activities below at this time.
All non-essential gatherings should be canceled, postponed, or done remotely. Unfortunately, at this time, I have no standard definition of “non-essential” or “gathering” to guide your decisions.  Use your best judgment.
Stop shaking hands.
Increase in the amount of remote working or teleworking to the extent possible especially for those who appear at higher risk for developing the disease, those over the age of 60 and those with co-morbid conditions.
Under all circumstances, stop touching your face, eyes, nose, or mouth with your unwashed hands.
I am not asking for the implementation of these activities, but these are the types of activities we may need to implement in the future:
School closures. Schools are an essential gathering. School closings present a particularly vexing social distancing dilemma but may be necessary to protect public health. Once school closings occur, they may be extensive and extended.
Social distancing—staying at least 6 feet away from all other people—should be attempted where possible.
Rationing (a formal process of prioritizing distribution and use) of critical supplies may need to occur.
To get ourselves through the hard times that may be coming, your community may need volunteers. Think now about the skills you have and how you can help your community. Heed the call should volunteers be requested.
Other public health interventions that have been used with some effect in other countries include commandeering of both real estate or personal property, conscription, curfew, and cordons. It is unlikely that these interventions would be used here due to practical considerations.
Issues around testing for COVID-19. You may have received incorrect information from the federal and state government on March 4, 2020. San Mateo County does not currently have testing available independently of the state and CDC. The amount of testing that is available through the state and CDC is severely limited. Should testing become more widely available, testing will be prioritized based on healthcare infrastructure concerns, risk of exposure, and/or very sick hospitalized patients. Tests will not automatically be given upon request or by a physician’s order. This may change as testing capacity evolves over the next few months."

Guys and Girls!

Soo, Behind The Sign is STILL active, though you might have thought otherwise seeing as though I haven't posted on here in WAY TOO LONG! But, my friends, we're back in business!

I thought I'd wish you all a very happy new year. I hope that 2020 has been starting off as a great year for all of you. It's been very busy on this end - with lots of people - and things -  to be grateful for!

As a quick update for all of you in the life of Jesse Daley, I've been spending lots of time working with a fantastic writing company. I really enjoy it, and it provides me with a creative outlet when I'm not on-set or working on other filming projects, such as my YouTube Channel. I've also recorded several episodes of my podcast, "Behind the Sign, Acting Advice." I'd love to hear your thoughts about it ;).

And speaking of YouTube, I'm about to release some new content with a focus on travel! I'm super excited for you to check it out!!

Enough about me, though! How are YOU?! Please let me know how you're all doing either in a comment here, or on social media. I love hearing from you.

Remember that you have everything that it takes to make this year YOUR YEAR!
You're totally unique and one of a kind. Show 2020 - and the world - your gifts and talents!

So much love to all of you!!

Guys and girls!! It feels like it's been forever!

To be exact, my last post here was back at the end of May, and that's just not acceptable! I apologize for my lack for Behind-the-Signing.

I am, however, very happy to report that life is going well on this end, and I'm now living in Santa Monica, not far from the beautiful Pacific ocean. I can walk (or jog!) there and I really love it! I plan to finally get back into surfing again, and I'll be showing everyone the new place on my YouTube Channel this week!

I thought I'd check in with all of you tonight in particular to see how you are all feeling. There's been so much craziness here in the USA over the past weekend with violence, and I suppose I wanted to take to my social media and just share a message of love.

We see lots of negative images on a regular basis in the media, and it can be easy to feel hopeless and become overwhelmed by an overall sense of sadness when we see those images and read about horrible stories.

I wanted to remind all of you that you are loved. And despite some of the terrible events that occur in the world, it is incredibly important to do what you can to stay positive - and choose to look at the beautiful aspects of life around us. There is always hope!

So, to my reader friend out there, you have got so much to offer this world, and there is lots of love around you.

Just thought I'd remind you!

See you soon on the YouTubesssss,

Guys and girls! How are yaaaa!

Happy Wednesday!

I hope you're all doing well and I hope your May has been fan-friggen-tastic!! I thought I'd give you a few updates on what's happening over here in DaleyPlanet, and I'm excited to share new things with you!

I've been taking some time to really focus on what my personal and professional goals are, and I've been working to identify what truly brings me happiness. I believe that this is something that we should all do on a consistent basis!

The acting and entertainment industry is incredible, and I love it. But it's changing at a rapid rate. As much as I love Hollywood and I love acting, I've recognized that what I truly enjoy is simply storytelling, motivating others to be themselves, and connecting in numerous ways. Of course, acting has a lot do to with this, but there are SO MANY avenues that I have been exploring that allow me to find this sort of connection and feel fulfilled. And that is super exciting!

For example, I have a great new writing job which I'm really enjoying, and I have been working on creating new travel videos for my YouTube Channel! This has provided me with the opportunity to travel and meet new people, as well as connect with so many men and women. (Please check out my YouTube if you haven't had a chance to do so!) I also have a new podcast that is connected to this blog, and here's the link to it!

I also have made some plans to simplify and minimize my lifestyle. I have a small apartment as it is (you'll know what I mean if you have seen my videos!). However, I have so much STUFF, and I just don't need all of it! Therefore, I've been selling and donating lots of clothes and items that I don't absolutely need! It's very freeing.

Another avenue of expression is singing and playing guitar, and that's something that I plan to dedicate more time to.

To sum up these thoughts, my friends, take some time to identify what truly makes you happy and focus on doing one thing at a time, one day at a time. (This is the same process that I used to write my first book, by the way!)

When you know what you want, you can work towards creating your own version of paradise.

Please feel free to connect with me on my Twitter, Instagram and my YouTube (as well as here in the comments below) and let me know what your interests are. I'll do what I can to help point you in a direction of what could help you find your true happiness!

 Talk soon!

Jesse xx
